Universal Memory is now driving force in semiconductor industry

Flash memory devices based on polycrystalline silicon floating gate and silicon nitride (silicon- oxide- nitride- oxide- silicon, or SONOS/TANOS structures) as memory layer according to projections will replace in future magnetic and optical memory (see figure from  paper of S. M. Sze, Evolution of Nonvolatile Semiconductor Memory: From Floating-Gate to Single-Electron Memory Cell, in “Future Trends in Microelectronics”, Edited by S. Luryi, J. Xu, and A. Zaslavsky, John Wiley& Sons, Inc. 1999).
